Girls Tennis Fall Preview

Although its first match is more than a week away, the girls tennis team is hard at work preparing themselves.
The team, which wrapped up its try outs earlier last week, began working out its lineup on Aug. 18. The lineup, managed by Coach Dave Assorson, is determined by placing all of the girls in challenges.
Challenges consist of three doubles matches, each made up of eight games. Players rotate partners playing the eight game sets until they have played with each of the other three girls on their court, and at the end of all three matches, the scores for individual players are totaled and ranks are given out to all of the competitors.
The highest ranked players compete on court one, and players at the bottom of the ladder play on court six. The winners and losers of each challenge move up or down a court depending on their results, then have to fight to keep the position they want on the rankings.
“Challenges make me anxious because they’re so unpredictable,” senior Becky Drake said. “You can play really badly and yet get a great score in the challenges—or some days you play so well and yet you still lose every match.”
The girls play hard in practices to get ready for their first non-league match on Sept. 9 against Oaks Christian. Until then, practices are spent finishing challenges and perfecting the line-up for the first match.
“Going into challenges, you never know what’s going to happen. It could go either way,” Drake said. “I lose sleep at night over this—isn’t that kind of sad?”
