Neko Atsume: Kitty Collector is an app developed by Hit-Point. In the game, players get a yard in which they can place food and a variety of items to attract different kinds of cats. Each cat has their own personality, power level and preferred items. The game is becoming increasingly popular with people both in Asia and the US, scoring a 4.5 in reviews on both the Apple Store and Google Play.
“I heard about it through a friend of mine,” said senior Jena Solomon. “I really like cats, and the game looked so cute, so I downloaded it. I like it as much as I expected.”
After visiting and playing with the toys in the yard or relaxing in a cushion, the kitties leave sardines for the yard owner. These fish can be either regular or gold and are used to purchase items. Players can also use fish to expand their yard, which allows them to place even more toys and attract even more cats. After purchasing a yard expansion, options for yard remodeling also become available.
The point of the game is to collect as many cats and items as possible, to have a flourishing yard full of feline companions. While the cat is visiting in the yard, the player can take pictures of them and save the photos to each cat’s album. Certain cats only visit for specific items. Ramses the Great, for example, only visits yards with the Pyramid Tent. For this reason, it is important to buy a variety of toys and cushions from the store.
“It’s fun because it’s a very calm game,” said junior Morgan. “It allows you to create your own world of cat friends. I would highly recommend it.”
Kitties can also leave mementos for players to collect. If the cat visits the yard enough times, they leave thoughtful, albeit useless, gifts, such as bottle caps, buttons, or expired coupons. The rare cats will leave more eccentric mementos based on their themes, such as rolling pins and train tickets. According to the game’s official info, a memento left by a cat shows that they have become friends with the player.
A large part of the enjoyment of the game is that it isn’t time consuming for players. Cats visit one’s yard and leave gifts while the app is closed.
“The cats in the game are not your cats, so you don’t have to worry about not checking the app or having them starve,” said Solomon. “Its really just an app you check on and watch cute cartoon cats doing cute cartoon cat things.”
