Speaking as someone who is a current teenager and who grew up watching the original 2004 teen comedy “Mean Girls”, the musical cannot even compare. Although it was based off of the Broadway production of “Mean Girls” (the musical), an adaptation of the 2004 film, the differences were laughable. The change of music, lyrics, and tone, not to mention the amount of autotune, affected the whole point of the movie. Although Angourie Rice (Cady Heron) can act, her theater voice was not meant for Mean Girls. The aggression and emotion were gone. Let’s talk about the star of the movie. Renee Rapp as Regina George had to be the best move made by the producers and directors. Bringing in fans from her current music that’s popular right now, plus the number of people who have loved her since she was Regina George in Mean Girls on Broadway back in 2019-2020. The disappointment of the amount of people that Christopher Briney (Aron Samuels) brought into the theater was something different. A musical with an actor not singing, who would’ve thought, right? The movie is composed of famous actors who can’t sing, with occasional appearances of the old members of the cast from Mean Girls 2004. A solid 5/10 for the Mean Girls Musical. Maybe next time they will focus on the musical part of the musical.
I’m not a mean girl but….
Here are my thoughts on the Mean Girls Musical based on the Broadway production that was released on January 12, 2024
