On Sept. 13, students from all over Southern California visited the Latino College Exhibition held at La Verne University. The fun and informative event allowed students to explore the campus and gather information on colleges they might want to attend.
“I thought it was a great experience,” senior Manuel Lopez said. “It was really fun talking to the people who gave information about the colleges and what they provide.”
With over fifty colleges and trade schools, the event offered a wide variety of resources for students to explore, even for those unsure about what to major in. The various workshops and booths provided insight on how to decide on a major, info on financial aid, college applications, and more.
Students had the freedom to explore the university campus to get a feel of what college life is like, exploring the classrooms as well as the student dorms. They also got the chance to speak with students who were already enrolled in certain classes or programs, observing useful habits and tricks.
“I liked exploring the campus,” junior Jayson Munoz said. “And there was a place where you could sign up for the college and already put yourself into the system, which I thought was cool.”
The collaborative event brought a variety of colleges from all over the West Coast, eager to pique students’ interest. Options ranged from four-year universities to community colleges, trade schools, and technical schools..
The representatives at the booths handed out bags filled with promotional items and swag to help students remember them.
“I found it very engaging,” junior Hazel Castañeda said. “I got to talk to a bunch of different colleges and find out more about the major that I was wondering about.”
The exhibition also offered opportunities for those looking to go straight into a public service occupation after high school. Booths with representatives from the sheriff academy and the fire academy provided students with information on how to apply, including what the different jobs would entail.
With various opportunities and options for the future after high school, it may feel overwhelming for some. However, these students have already taken the initiative and are exploring the opportunities available to them to succeed and be satisfied with their careers.
