With a stinging chill in the air, professional writers and aspiring journalists gathered in Boston, MA for the annual JEA/NSPA Fall National High School Journalism Convention. Here, The Lancer faced a week packed with speakers, workshops and pop-ups, each focused on the future of journalism and media.

“I had the opportunity to visit and tour The Boston Globe,” Editor-in-Chief Momo Sonoda said. “We always hear that print is dying, and seeing how they are working to combat this notion was eye-opening.”

With each interactive session, convention attendees gained valuable insights and ideas for future media projects to further themselves in the ever-changing, complicated landscape of journalism. Sessions covered a range of topics, including editing, team managing, writing, photoshop and…Taylor Swift? There was something for everyone, including Swifties, at this year’s Journalism Convention. 

Finally, attendees participated in the JEA National Student Media Contests. Thousand Oaks High School came back home with four winners: senior Momo Sonoda (Superior in Newspaper Layout), sophomore Joey Goodnight (Excellent in Editorial Cartooning), junior Alyssa Kiszczak (Excellent in Graphic Design: Advertising) and junior Alan Ko (Excellent in Sports Feature Photography).  

The 2024 Journalism Convention will be held in Philadelphia, PA for yet another week of coming together to share knowledge as the media landscape continues to evolve with the times.
