Stuck in a sewage drain with no way out, how will Tintin and his dog Snowy escape this predicament? “Atchoo!” Well then, a sneeze is one way to blow a sewage gate out. “The Adventures of TinTin, Reporter for “Le Petit Vingtieme” in the Land of the Soviets” by Georges Remi, or Hergé, details the, as the title suggests, the adventures of a reporter, TinTin, and his dog Snowy through the soviet union. From constructing a train track car out of junk to fending off tigers, TinTin and Snowy never cease to amaze with their intense yet humorous journey.

In addition to entertaining events throughout the story, the author also utilizes humour in creative ways. For instance, when TinTin escapes from the sewage vent, he dives into a river which he soon realizes is off limits for swimming when he is called out by a police officer nearby. However, while being lectured, the officer notices a coin nearby. While leaning over to pick up the coin, the officer gets pushed into the river by TinTin who subsequently calls out the officer for swimming in a no swim zone the same way the officer called out TinTin.

The Adventures of TinTin does not come without potential irks that some may have. Written in 1929, this particular comic in the series contains content about Soviet Russia, including scenes concerning forced dictatorship and propaganda. For those who only are looking for light-hearted content such as “Calvin and Hobbes”, “The Adventures of TinTin, Reporter for “Le Petit Vingtieme” in the Land of the Soviets” may be a bit too “political”. Such scenes however, are short and do not detract from the humour presented throughout the rest of the story.

Overall, aside from small portions of political jabs between countries, The Adventures of TinTin, Reporter for “Le Petit Vingtieme” in the Land of the Soviets offers many amusing moments which have the potential to keep readers hooked with a continuous stream of fresh and unexpected scenes.
